Members
of the local BMX, SK8 and Inline project didn’t hesitate when
they heard that a group in Lincoln were having difficulty finding
a site for their Skate Park worth thousands of pounds and were offering
to give it free to a worthy cause.
Margaret Codling – chair of
the group - takes up the story.
“When I heard the news on the “Look
North” TV programme I got straight in touch with Mike McDonald,
our town’s new development manager, who had seen the item
too and already contacted the organisers in Lincoln.
Time was tight as we only had 7 days in which to take action.
He wrote our bid for the park, sent it in and kept in touch with
Rosemary from the group over there.
In the meantime, our new Mayor, Tony Howard was using all his contacts
to find some temporary storage with ELDC and other organisations,
Helen Matthews the chair of the Tourism Forum was looking for a
permanent site and Shelagh Price at Linkage Green was searching
for transport”.
Margaret herself then contacted lots of local business people to
try and get some help to load and unload it onto lorries.
Mike McDonald comments –
“The response from everyone in the
town we contacted has been really amazing – not one single
person or organisation turned us down – and no-one wanted
payment for the help or facilities which they freely offered when
we explained what we needed. Everyone knows how few facilities we
have for young people here in Mablethorpe, and this was a chance
that we couldn’t let slip through our fingers”
On Friday morning the news came through that the Skate Park had
been donated to the group, who now only have a week in which to
collect and house it, prior to finding it a permanent home.
Tony Howard, the Mayor said
“It just shows what this town can
do when the chips are down and we need to get things done –
now the town’s young people will have a large professional
skate park worth many thousands of pounds which would have taken
us years to raise in the normal way.
I’d like to thank everyone who offered to help out –
in particular Lloyd Sylvester from Grange Leisure Park for providing
temporary covered storage and Rob Manning from the funfair for the
offer of transport and a permanent site”
